Do asylum and small-boat totals overlap?
One person can appear in both.
An asylum claim is a request for protection. A small-boat arrival records an entry route. The Home Office says almost all small-boat arrivals claim asylum, so the same person can appear in both series.
People can also claim asylum after entering by other routes. Small-boat arrivals do not measure all asylum claims or all irregular migration.
An asylum table may count main applicants, people including dependants, applications or decisions. An initial decision and a final outcome after appeal are different stages.
Does a rise in asylum decisions tell you how many people arrived that month?

No. Decisions can relate to claims made in an earlier period.
