What is net migration?

Arrivals minus departures.

Long-term immigration counts people moving to the UK for at least 12 months. Long-term emigration counts people leaving for at least 12 months. Net migration is immigration minus emigration.

A fall in net migration does not necessarily mean fewer people arrived. The difference can also fall when more people leave. Read all three series together.

These are estimates that can be revised. A year ending June covers a different 12-month period from a year ending December. Compare the same periods and use the same release edition.

If arrivals stay the same and departures rise, what happens to net migration?
